If even one tiny thing prevents a true gigabit connection, the NAS and your router/switch agree to fall back to a stable 100 Mbps connection instead of completely dropping the signal.Here is exactly why this is happening and how to fix it, ordered from the most common culprit to the least.The Main CulpritsThe Ethernet Cable (90% of cases): Gigabit speeds require all 8 wires (4 pairs) inside the Ethernet cable to be perfectly functional. A standard 100 Mbps connection only requires 4 wires (2 pairs). If your cable is Cat5 (not Cat5e or Cat6), has a tiny break in one wire, or has a faulty RJ45 plug, the NAS will silently fallback to 100 Mbps. |
