Trump's importance to the Republican Party right now is somewhere between enormous and irreplaceable, but the irreplaceability is more about his person as an enforcement mechanism and emotional focal point than about the policy agenda, which is largely already enacted or in motion. If he died tomorrow, the policies would largely persist under Vance, but the party would almost immediately enter a genuinely open succession struggle for the first time in a decade, the personal revenge campaigns and improvisational chaos would end, and moderate Republicans would have political oxygen again. Whether that would make the GOP stronger or weaker long-term is an open questio, but it would make the party's internal politics dramatically more contested. |
